It does not replace the gynaecological examination, which remains an important complement to the periodic check-up to protect the health of the woman. The test is performed with a gentle collection of cells from the cervix, using a thin wooden spatula and a toothbrush. The collected material is smeared on a slide and subsequently analysed under a microscope.
